Sierra Madre Community Arts Commission Releases Calendar of Events for Spring 2008

 

Monday, March 3 at 7 p.m. – Author's Night

WriteGirl at the Sierra Madre Youth Activity Center – Free Event - 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd.

WriteGirl is a non-profit mentoring organization that pairs teenage girls with professional women writers for one-one-one mentoring sessions and monthly workshops.  The group’s motto of “Never Underestimate the Power of a Girl and Her Pen” sums up the organization’s commitment to encouraging all forms of written creative expression including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, journalism, songwriting and scriptwriting, and their belief in the power of what women and girls have to say.  WriteGirl has produced six award-winning anthologies of participant writing newest being Lines of Velocity which was released in January 2008.  The program reaches a diverse group of women and girls from every ethnic and socio-economic background.  Mentors and mentees, several of whom live and work in the San Gabriel Valley, will read from the new book as well original unpublished work.

 

Friday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. – City Hall Art Show Opening Night Reception

Sierra Madre City Hall, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

The work of local watercolorist Myra Epstein has been chosen to adorn the walls of City Hall throughout the month of March. The public is invited to a free opening night reception to meet the artist and get an up close view of her work.

 

Saturday, March 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Commission Sponsored Field Trip to San Antonio Winery

This Cultural and Historical Landmark is a favorite of Angelenos. Long before Napa became popular, Los Angeles was the wine capital of California. Trip includes a tour of the winery, tastings of their award winning wines, and lunch. $23.00/person. Bus departs from Community Recreation Center, 611 E. Monday, April 7 at 7 p.m. – Author's Night

Open Mic Poetry Slam at Beantown Coffee Bar – Free Event - 45 N. Baldwin Ave.

The Arts Commission will set-up a stage and take over a corner of Beantown Coffee Bar and invite poets to step up to the mic and celebrate National Poetry Month.  This event is open to anyone brave enough to share their work, but we ask that poets keep in mind an all-ages audience when choosing the pieces they will read.  Those who wish to read should arrive a few minutes early and sign-in.

"Rhythm & Rhyme – Sierra Madre's Jazz & Poetry Festival"

Community Center Back Patio, Sierra Vista Park, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd.

Come celebrate National Jazz Appreciation and National Poetry Month with some of the best musicians and poets in the area! Bring the family and see local teen talent take the stage alongside professional musicians and poets. Food, drink, raffle prizes. Pre-Sale tickets, $10/person, available April 1. Regular tickets $15 at the door.

Sunday, June 1 – 2nd Annual Open Studio Tour - Throughout the city

Sierra Madre artists will throw open the doors to their studios and let their friends and neighbors get a sneak peek into their working process. This is an opportunity for artists to showcase their work to a new audience, and for art patrons to discover new talent and add to their personal collections.
