Coming from a background in labor negotiations on both sides of the table in cities such as Detroit, Toledo and Pittsburgh, I'm dumbfounded by the little league tactics being used by the police union. See www.sierramadresucks.com. While I support a salary range nearer or matching South Pasadena, they've lost my support. The city should respond by offering the crime rates of the cities they are benchmarking. Is it really appropriate to compare salaries to those in West Covina, etc? The SM police blotters are more entertaining than apalling. Plus, once you remove U-turn violations, what crimes are there in SM? I understand there was a murder in town, and from what I understand the SM police's work in that case has raised alot of questions. My message to our local police officers is to move on if you are unhappy. How many of you readers are still in the same position as your "entry level" position when you started your careers? At best, we should indeed increase the salaries, but grandfather the current salaries for the current staff. The higher salaries should be reserved for higher quality officers that we need to recruit from the outside.
