I had been hoping that someone who had actual figures would respond to your post, but since they haven't, here's what I have. Here is the story that ran on the home page after the City Council meeting of 3/24/03. This does not include the actual rates, but I'm sure you can get that information by calling City Hall and talking to someone in the Water Dept. and/or Public Works. 355-7135. Council Approves Water Rate Hike After hearing from nearly a dozen residents who were unhappy with the idea, and one who begrudgingly admitted the need, while agreeing that he too was unhappy, City Council last night voted to approve an increase in water rates for the years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The new rate is needed to pay for much needed upgrades to the water infrastructure. The new rate is part of a "three-legged stool" approach for payment of the infrastructure, as Mayor Pro Tem Bart Doyle described it. It takes into account funds raised by two short term bond issues and funds raised from state and federal agencies, reducing the burden on Sierra Madre water purchasers. Council members responded to calls from the speakers for an annual oversight requirement to prevent spikes such as this from re-occurring. Councilmember Stockly also called for a new look at the utility tax that is charged on the water bill, stating that residents complaints of double taxation may be valid and perhaps some redress can be made by reducing the utility tax. Councilmember Torres compared the cost of bottled water to tap water, citing the low cost of tap water even with the new rates, and Mayor Hayes reminded the audience that in these days of potential emergencies that could affect our City's ability to deliver water, the City is at greater risk due to reduced water storage levels needed to alleviate problems caused by the aging water system.
