Sounds like you are ready to become involved. I recently had the opportunity to attend a thank you dinner after the Rose Parade, and was shocked to see only 30 people there. Out of a town of 11,000, that's not many. I recognize that in the last few days before the parade, there are dozens who show up to help with the float, one family from, I think, Cypress (?) has showed up seven or eight years in a row now, and UCI was supposed to send some people up, and the community always helps with that part of it. But there are just a few people who actually make this float happen year after year, and their tireless efforts are to be commended. I can't speak for the Association, (I just donate my time on their web page). However, I believe they would love to see a much larger community involvement. There are forms on their web page www.sierramadrenews.net/smrose.htm where you can become involved in the design, if you don't like the designs. This year's float did have animation, unfortunately a glitch caused it to not work, as I understand. When you are dealing with unknowns in both labor and funding, you might have a tendency to go for a simpler float. Once the design is approved, there is a lot that goes into making the float ready for the people who show up to help put the flowers on. There are skeletal frames to be made, usually by bending steel rebar and welding. This is a year long project, and I personally would love to see the whole community get behind it. As to your comments about the other self-built floats - the Cal Poly floats have the resources of two different universities, both of which have student populations larger than the population of Sierra Madre. The other communities that have self-built floats receive much more financial support from their city government. I have not confirmed these figures, and have no idea of their accuracy, but I have heard it said that our city donated $2,500 and the next lowest donation from a self-built city government to their float was closer to $60,000 (City government and Rose Float Assn. members, is that accurate?). However, it is my understanding that the Rose Float Association is taking steps to ramp up the organization and its goals. I do know that they have been much more responsive and pro-active with providing information to me to put on the website and to take advantage of other online resources. I noticed they have done the same with the local papers. In short, while I understand that you have concerns, I encourage you to take this opportunity to be a part of the solution. Get involved. Submit a design. Encourage your friends, especially artistic ones, to do the same. Give the Association a lot of choices from which to choose a design, and you're more likely to get a design that makes everyone happy. Contact the association and see how you can help, throughout the year, not just the final week. Perhaps with a few more volunteers, they could put on a few more fundraisers. Funds are always needed, and it would be nice if our community could help to put on successful fundraisers that utilize not only the funds of Sierra Madreans, but of surrounding communities as well. We can draw people in from other areas for the right activity. Bring your suggestions to the association, and maybe you can help make next year's float one that wins some awards. Sierra Madre has won awards in the past, it’s time we did again. But active participation by more than a couple dozen people is required.
