{"id":12653,"date":"2013-04-20T08:59:43","date_gmt":"2013-04-20T15:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierramadrenews.net\/?p=12653"},"modified":"2013-04-20T08:59:43","modified_gmt":"2013-04-20T15:59:43","slug":"holdens-bill-to-boost-california-agriculture-passes-second-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sierramadrenews.net\/?p=12653","title":{"rendered":"Holden\u2019s Bill to Boost California Agriculture Passes Second Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Press Release posted 4\/20\/13 &#8211; Sacramento \u2013<\/em> The Assembly Agriculture Committee today heard testimony on Assemblymember Chris Holden\u2019s legislation to ensure that California fruit, nuts, livestock and vegetables are given priority when it comes to state purchasing.<\/p>\n<p>Under Holden\u2019s AB 199 Choose California Act, state agencies would be required to give California agriculture producers priority when purchasing food products if the price is within 5% of the lowest out-of-state competitor. School districts would have to purchase California grown products as long as they aren\u2019t more expensive than out-of-state products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAB 199 uses the state\u2019s purchasing power to bolster California\u2019s Agri-business and that means more jobs and more revenue and that\u2019s good for California\u2019s bottom line,\u201d said Assemblymember Holden. \u201cThis bill is a win-win for everyone. The public institutions get a locally-grown product, we\u2019re helping create opportunities for our farmers and a new appreciation for local food helps stimulate the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia Citrus Mutual is excited to support this legislation as it puts before our young people and population the wonderful bounty we produce in California. To have this focus is a win for agriculture and a win for our state.\u201d Joel Nelsen, President, California Citrus Mutual<\/p>\n<p>The Agriculture Committee voted unanimously (7 to 0) in favor of AB 199.
