This year's new addition to the month long slate of events for Pioneer Days ’99 was a beard-growing contest, sponsored by Solid Shave, a new concept in shaving for men and women.  The contest was begun Sept. 16, when entrants gathered at Kersting Court to register and have their pre-beard photographs taken.   All entrants received Solid Shave just for entering.

Judging took place on Oct. 16th at Renaissance Plaza, to the accompaniment of a barbershop quartet from the San Gabriel Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.  The Quartet was 5-State champion "The Energizers" The Judge was Rod Otto of Hastings Ranch Barbershop, located in Renaissance Plaza.

There were two categories for judging: most growth and fullness, and originality/unique design.

The winner in each category received dinner for two at any of Sierra Madre’s restaurants, Lozano, Corfu, Cajun Way, etc., it was the winner’s choice.  In addition, winners  received a $25 gift certificate to any Sierra Madre retailer, Once Upon A Time, Leonora Moss, Gerspach and Cecil, etc., again it was the winner’s choice.  Each winner also received a shave (if they choose to shave) and a haircut by men’s grooming specialist Sheryl of Briana Salon for Hair, a $40 value.  Prizes were provided by Solid Shave, available at Briana Salon for Hair.
