Mary Carney to Lead Woman’s Club for Second Year

by Phyllis Chapman Posted 6/2/13 – Mary Carney was installed president of the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club for a second term at their May Installation Tea, held at Essick House, their historic clubhouse at 550 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.  Board Members and Directors installed with Carney are: Denise Reistetter, Elma Flores, “Mike” Ruggles, Mary Jane Baker, Beverly Clifton, Alma Mays, Phyllis Chapman, Betty Mackie, Anne Montgomery, Trini Ornelas and Karlene Englert.   Patricia Starkey, a past president of Sierra Madre Civic Club, was installing officer.

The event brought down the curtain on a very busy, productive year with high praise for Carney’s excellent leadership.  The Club’s annual donation to worthy causes was $20,000.00, and recipients included the following: five worthy graduating high school seniors who received scholarships, four students who received music awards, the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, Sierra Madre Community Foundation, Sierra Madre Public Library, Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society, the world famous Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, Sierra Madre Police Officers’ Association, Sierra Madre Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, the Mt. Wilson Trail Race Committee, Sierra Madre Playhouse, Sierra Madre Friends of the Arts, Sierra Madre 4th of July Committee, Sierra Madre Girls Softball Association, Sierra Madre Elementary School, Foothill Creative Arts Group (scholarship), Learning Disabilities FAVA-Music Scholarships, YMCA Student Government, Spero Foundation, Convalescent Aid Society, Foothill Unity Center, Girl Scouts of America, Haven House, Hospice, Union Station, Canine Companions, Women at Work, and the VFW Flag Fund.

The Club also actively supports the San Gabriel District Federation of Women’s Clubs and contributed to their projects; Habitat for Humanity, Prevention of Domestic Abuse and Human Trafficking.

Club members Rosemeary Morabito, Trini Ornelas and Sheila Pierce were recognized for their outstanding Club Service.
