City Issues Warning re: Mountain Lion Sightings – Updated

Posted 10/4/11 – A couple of mountain lions have been sighted on City streets in the east side of town, in the 600 block of Camillo.  The sighting was at about 12:30am this morning.  You can see some video here.

The City has now issued the following alert:

Mountain Lion Sighting

Early this morning two full size mountain lions were seen wandering the streets in the north east portion of Sierra Madre. Although these animals seem passive they can be very dangerous. Do not approach the animals. If you see them call the police, keep small pets, and children inside. Mountain Lions primarily prey on deer and larger animals. Reducing food for those types animals in your area will help to keep the mountain lions well into the foothills.

Second alert from City:

Staying Safe in Mountain Lion Country

Mountain lions are quiet, solitary and elusive, and typically avoid people.

Mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare.

Here are some safety tips:

Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
Keep a close watch on small children.
Do not approach a mountain lion.
If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
If attacked, fight back.
If a mountain lion attacks a person, immediately call 911.
