Teachers, Students Surprise Retiring Principal Gayle Bluemel

SM School's retiring principal Gayle Bluemel has been named Grand Marshal of the 2011 4th of July parade

Teachers and students surprised an emotional Gayle Bluemel this morning at Sierra Madre School, turning a “fire drill” into a flash mob, singing and dancing to the Beatles tune “Oh-blah-di, oh-bla-da,” with the willing participation of members of the Sierra Madre Fire Department, who even joined the dancing toward the end.  Bluemel began teaching at Sierra Madre School in 1990, and served for a time as vice-principal under Ty Gaffney, before replacing Gaffney in 2006 upon his retirement.  She recently announced that she will retire effective June 30, 2011.  Shortly after the retirement announcement, she was named Grand Marshal of the 4th of July parade.

Unfortunately, we were unaware this “flash mob” performance was going to happen so we weren’t there to cover it, but fortunately Sierra Madre Patch had someone on hand, and they captured it on video, which you can view by clicking here.
