New Laws in 2012 That Affect Employees/Employers

Posted 12/23/11 – Did you know that beginning January 1st, 2012, it will be illegal to use credit reports to help decide whether or not to hire most employees? That misclassifying an employee as an independent contractor could result in a fine as high as $25,000 PER INCIDENT? That there are not one, but FIVE new laws that change workers’ compensation insurance? That employees that are compensated with commission must have a written contract that defines it (okay, there’s a year grace period on this one)? Pregnancy insurance and leave laws have changed, rules regarding time off for bone marrow and organ donors have been clarified, and much, much more.

If you are a business owner or an employee, you should be aware of these changes! CalChamber has put together a white paper overview of new state laws for 2012, it’s pretty simple and easy to read. If you are a business owner, it could keep you out of trouble, and save you money. If you are an employee, it could help you better understand your rights…You can find their overview here.
