Members of St. Rita's Boy Scout Troop 110 enjoy the flapjacks at the 2007 SMVFA annual Pancake Breakfast, this year set for May 17th. The whole town should really show up, after last weekend.

(5/16/05) Musicians to Perform at Art Fair  The 43rd annual Sierra Madre Art Fair is an irresistible feast for all the senses: beautiful art to look at, craft projects to make with your hands, a delectable assortment of food and drink and finally, an array of fabulous musicians to delight the ear.  To be  held Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday, May 22 from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM in Memorial Park, 222 West Sierra Madre Boulevard, the Art Fair will feature The Folk Collection, String Planet, Robby Longley and Sierra Madre Resident Ann Luke.  The Folk Collection are set to entertain Saturday from Noon to 2 PM at the park band shell with a selection of familiar folk songs that are meant to encourage audience participation. On Sunday at Noon, String Planet takes the helm with Novi Novog on viola and Larry Tuttle on The Stick, a unique twelve-stringed instrument that combines the properties of the electric guitar, bass guitar and piano. Acoustic guitarist Robby Longley follows at 2 PM with a virtuoso performance that blends the sounds of jazz, pop and world music with a flamenco flair. Additionally, the sweet notes of the hammered dulcimer will sound both days from 11AM to Noon when Ann Luke takes to the stage. The Sierra Madre Art Fair, showcasing the work of over 100 local and national artists, is sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, with proceeds continuing to support library programs, activities and development activities. Anyone wishing more information on the Sierra Madre Art Fair should contact Sharon Murphy at 626-355-3977 or contact Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, PO Box 334, Sierra Madre, CA, 91025.

(5/16/05)  Sierra Madre Has Long Tradition of the Arts, 43rd Art Fair Continues Tradition  What do Mt. Rushmore, the film Midnight Cowboy, and TV’s talking horse “Mr. Ed” have in common?  Sierra Madre, of course…Former residents of this beautiful town located just east of Pasadena played a leading role in the success of these, admittedly varied, artistic endeavors… John Gutzon Borglum was the distinguished sculptor of the famed Presidential foursome. James Leo Herlihy wrote the book Midnight Cowboy on which the classic film was based and Florence MacMichael played Winnie Kirkwood in the popular TV series…Long a haven for artists, writers and actors, the “Village of the Foothills”  continues its ongoing tradition as an art lovers’ haven with the 43rd annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, held Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday, May 22 from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM in Memorial Park, 222 West Sierra Madre Boulevard. Over 100 local and national artists will participate including featured artist Michael Crook, a wood carver whose powerful work, “Lean and Hungry” depicts a vigilant lioness that will be portrayed in all Art Fair promotions.  Visitors are invited to spend the spring weekend enjoying Sierra Madre’s charming small town atmosphere, drinking the Historical Society’s famous lemonade and sampling a variety of ethnic snacks.  Children are especially welcomed with storytellers and other events in the park including an exhibit by the Art Docents of the Sierra Madre Elementary School and the invitation to create a “Rockin’ Rattle” instrument under the guidance of the Creative Arts Group. The Sierra Madre Art Fair is sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, with proceeds continuing to support library programs, activities and development activities.

(5/10/05) Art Fair to be Kid Friendly!  Children are especially welcome at the 43rd annual Sierra Madre Art Fair May 21-22, with a host of activities designed particularly for junior art lovers.   Leading the way is the Creative Arts Group with a booth where at least 200 kids are expected to make not only art, but a lot of noise with a “Rockin’  Rattle” they’ll create with pie plates set on a wooden handle, some beans and a little attitude. Mary Wallis and daughter Cathy Manzo will provide instruction and materials for the lively percussion project which children will decorate in addition to constructing free of charge. Mary and Bruce Wallis were one of the six original couples that founded the Creative Arts Group in 1960 in order to provide expanded artistic experiences for their children. The long time participation of the Creative Arts Group in the Sierra Madre Art Fair is a natural extension of the organization’s original vision to enrich the community through art.  “It’s very important for us to nurture the children’s own intuitive creativity,” says Cathy. “At the art fair we try to come up with a project that they can make on their own, regardless of age.”   Other kid-friendly events include a Native American Story-teller and an exhibit of children’s art sponsored by the art docents of the Sierra Madre Elementary School. inspired by international cultures, school students have created their personal versions of various traditional icons including Katsina Dolls, Masai Shields and stationary decorated with Scandinavian stencils.

(4/5/05)  Sierra Madre Art Fair Set for May 21st, 22nd  The 43rd Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, in Memorial Park.  More than 100 artists will display an array of their fine art. Watercolors, oil paintings, jewelry, pottery, ceramics, glass, weaving, wood and photography will comprise the exhibits. This year’s featured artist is woodcarver Michael Crook who creates hand-carved, hand-painted wildlife pins and framed art pieces from a variety of hardwoods. Selected to theme the Art Fair is his “Lean…and Hungry” image of a lioness, which will be replicated on postcards, posters, T-shirts, totes and aprons.  Art Fair entertainment will include music onstage at the park’s Band Shell throughout the weekend. At a Food Court, both non-profit groups and other vendors will offer beverages and a wide range of foods including sausage sandwiches, burritos, Chinese chicken salad and pizza.  Art Fair hours are 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.  All proceeds benefit the Sierra Madre Public Library and its services, materials, and equipment. For further information, contact Sharon Murphy, (626) 355-3977, or visit the Art Fair website at www.sierramadreartfair.com.
