Sierra Madre Friends of the Library Wine Tasting a Big Success!!

By Bill Coburn

The Sierra Madre Friends of the Library Wine Tasting at the Villa at Alverno High School was a big success, despite some last minute scrambling that had to be done due to the weather.  According to Wendy Stockly, event chair, “While this year's event was moved from February to April to allow for the Centennial kick off to take place on the one hundredth anniversary of the city's incorporation, we thought we would have the added benefit of warmer weather.  Obviously, we were wrong!  The heavy rain left the terrace too wet to use so eight vendors were moved to other locations shortly before the event.  Fortunately, the downpour had stopped by 3pm which allowed the majority of the puddles to dissipate.”

Nearly 370 tickets were sold to the April 20th  event, which featured food from  more than 20 markets and restaurants, including Sierra Madre’s own Barney’s Only Place in Town, Café 322, Lucky Baldwin’s Delirium Café, Nano Cafe, Restaurant Lozano, Village Pizzeria and Wildflour Baking Co.   Nearly two dozen wine venders/pourers doled out samples of more than five and a half dozen different wines.

With preliminary figures showing gross income was $32,140 and preliminary expenses estimated at $12,000, approximately $20,000 was raised to help the Friends with their ongoing support of the Library.  Among the many programs sponsored by the Friends of the Library are the Travelers and Collectors narrative/slide series, the Summer Reading Club, the annual One Book, One City program, which is taking place over the next week,  Pre-school Story Hour, Teen Book club, and the Summer Reading Club.  In addition, The Friends contribute funds to help pay for adult computer classes, large print books, the CD, video, and books-on-tape collection, and the purchase of computer equipment and software for public use.

In addition to the plentiful and scrumptious food available throughout the evening, and the abundant varieties of wine, the Wine Tasting features a silent auction, with nearly 50 gift packages available for the attendees to bid on.  The most popular auction item was the Wine Tasting Committee dinner.  Other popular items were restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, sports items, and "city treats" such as lunch with the Mayor and a ride along with the police chief.

Said Stockly “I'm grateful for the hard working and very capable committee.  Each member did their part well, which allowed for a well organized event.”

In attendance representing the city were Mayor John Buchanan, Mayor Pro Tem Enid Joffe, Council Member Joe Mosca, and Interim City Manager Don Hopper, Police Chief Marilyn Diaz and new Captain Larry Giannone, and numerous Commissioners.  Council members Kurt Zimmerman and Don Watts did not attend.

Next year's event, the 38th Annual Cuisine and Wine Tasting, will return to its February date - the last Friday in February.  In the meantime, you can help them by stopping by the “Bargain Books Table” May 7th – May 12th, and the Art Fair, May 19th and 20th, as they continue their fundraising efforts.  Or you can stop by the Library and pick up an application to become a Friend, or download the application by clicking on the link at www.cityofsierramadre.com/index.php?mod=friends_library.  Did you know a family membership is just $20, and a patron membership is just $50?
