Older American Of The Year 2005 - Loyal America Camacho

Older American Reception, May 6, 2005

Older American of the Year Banquet Toasts Loyal Camacho Last Friday, May 6, at the Hart Memorial Park House, the Senior Community Commission honored Loyal America Camacho as Sierra Madre's Older American of the Year. Loyal (pictured above with her twin sister Gloria) volunteers much of her time to benefit the community.  Loyal's volunteer activities began shortly after moving to Sierra Madre from Hawaii about 20 years ago. She became a volunteer at the Sierra Madre Public Library then, and continues to volunteer her time there to this day (in photo at right, Director of Library Services Toni Buckner presents a commendation to Loyal). She works tirelessly five days a week in the Intervale Senior Lunch Program at the Hart Memorial Park House. That entails not only preparing the dishes for serving to the approximately 35 seniors at the Center, but also 10-20 meals for the Caps Program at nearby Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pasadena. After lunch, cleanup and sanitation of the kitchen begins.   On Tuesdays, she calls the city's Bingo game and on Saturdays the Senior's Club Bingo. She is also president of the Senior Club. She services the library at the British Home every other week, and is a member of the "Green Team" at the Sierra Madre Woman's Club, tending to their garden.  In photo at left, Woman's Club president Ann Luke gives Loyal a hug after the Woman's Club presentation).  Her schedule would tire those half her age, and her contribution to this community is immeasurable.  Approximately sixty people turned out to honor Loyal, and the theme of the day was Hawaiian, with pineapple centerpieces on the table, exotic flowers, and leis for all in attendance.  Click  on the photos below to see them larger.
