Random Observations by Pat Ostrye

"The Sky is Falling!" (9/12/08)

Really!  We read in large print that the 99 Cents Only stores May Turn Into 99 Cents Mostly (according to the L.A. TImes) and this is the second article in just a few days' time.  They really mean business and will have made a decision by the time this is in print.   I would go for even $1.50 Only!  There isn't a store anywhere that sells anything now in the 99 Cent stores for a measly $1.50.  So what would we have to lose?!!  I saw a few people interviewed on TV who said they would never go back to 99 Cent stores again if they raise the prices.  That would be foolish when, Ralph's, Albertson's, Pavilion, none of them could compete even with $1.50.

As the story goes, "they" have gone in the hole $1.5 million in just the last month. Some of the great items we have been able to purchase for this lowly sum include:  bread, even wonderful French bread. I bought only 3 loaves the last time and should have really stocked up for the freezer.  Bagels, muffins, hamburger and hot dog rolls!!    Then there's the produce:  3 large Romaine hearts in a package, 8 tomatoes, 6 large free-stone peaches, large bag of grapes, huge bag of potatoes, large bag of bananas, whole watermelon and cantaloupe, it goes on and on - even all kinds of salad dressings, catsup, mustard, salt, pepper, a complete rack of spices.  For awhile they were out of eggs but a week ago I was able to get them for 99 cents/dozen.

Then there's all that houshold stuff and gift wrappings.  Where can you get gift bags for 59 cents?  Or a package of tissue paper or greeting cards of every description for 99 cents?!  And 15 large kitchen bags, also larger trash bags even and every size plastic bag and aluminum foil!  The inventory is endless.  Please let them just raise the price a little and stay in business.

All of this chatter is 'much ado about nothing' when one turns on the computer and  the first item in the News is the price of Cindy McCain's 'outfit' worn for her speech the first time - ugly gold color and 'too much'.  The one she wore for the final night and her husband's speech was really elegant but we haven't been told what that 'outfit' cost.  The price of the 'ugly gold' one, broken down, goes like this:  Dress, $3000, watch $4500, 3-carat diamond earrings $280,000, 4-strand pearls $11,000-$25,000, shoes $475 - total between $299,100 and $313,100.  Something that grand could hardly be worn twice.  Perhaps the dress at least goes on E-Bay.  Noone would notice or mind if the diamonds, pearls and shoes showed up at another gathering!
