Jacki Raymond -- Artist in Residence

You might wonder why we're featuring an Arcadian for our volunteer series. The reason? Jacki Raymond spends more time in Sierra Madre than in Arcadia. As executive director of Creative Arts Group (CAG) she is actually working and volunteering here more than in Arcadia. And she's at home with many artists in the San Gabriel Valley.

"I believe there are more artists per capita in Sierra Madre than in most other towns," Jacki stated. She ought to know. She shares brushes and palettes with most artists in this part of the state because of her talents and her position at CAG.

What are some of her activities in Sierra Madre? She worked on the Youth Master Plan and the Cultural Heritage Master Plan. Jacki was on the Sierra Madre Community Arts Commission for eight years and on the Chamber of Commerce Board. Years ago she served on the Skilled Nursing Board and at about that time painted the wistaria vine design featured on the kiosk in Kersting Court. Jacki is secretary of Kiwanis Club.

Jacki and her husband, Dave, belong to Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia and both are part of the Bell Choir there. She grew up in Altadena and Arcadia, graduating from Arcadia High School. She received an Arts degree from Cal State L.A. and did graduate work at Cal Poly Pomona.

"I continued to be drawn to art after our two girls were born, then went back to Cal State L.A. for more training," Jacki explained. Actually, she took some business courses at Cal Poly, too, a perfect blend to prepare her for her first (and only job) there so far. The art studio and school have grown considerably, both in size and scope, in those 30 years.

Although she isn't an active, working artist, Jacki has multiple abilities and all in artist avenues.

Jacki said, I very much enjoy doing things for somebody besides myself. It's great to support nonprofit groups. Sierra Madre is a town that's concerned. People here care."

Dave grew up in Fullerton and met Jacki in Arcadia when he moved there with his family. He graduated from Stanford in electronic engineering and now works at Gale Banks Engineering in Azusa.

The Raymonds have two daughters and four grandchildren.
