 For
four out of the last five years Sharon Pevsner (click photo at left to enlarge)
has been the woman to beat, the first female across the finish line, in the
venerable and much-loved Mt. Wilson Trail Race in Sierra Madre. But this year
another woman will have the coveted shot at the title as Pevsner will be
watching this annual test of speed, skill, and stamina from the sidelines.
Have no fear. Pevsner has not
given up racing for good and is hoping she will be back at the head of the pack
next year. But for this, the 100th Anniversary of the first trail race, Pevsner
is seven months pregnant and taking it easy.
She's not skipping the
festivities however. This four time local champ will be on hand to watch
daughter Julia, 3, run in her first kids' race, and cheering on friends, former
competitors, and husband Bill in their early morning assault up the mountain.
Coincidentally, the last time Pevsner did not come in first in the women's
division she was pregnant with Julia.
Pevsner, 39, has been running
the race for seven or eight years, but says that the first time she won she was
absolutely shocked. In fact she was so shocked by just the idea of the race when
she first heard about it that she knew she just had to get involved.
"I thought everybody was crazy
that did it," Pevsner explained of why she signed up for her first Mt. Wilson
Trail Race. Of course, since that first competition she became hooked, as so
many runners do. And while she runs other trail and road races around the area,
Mt. Wilson holds a special place in her heart. "There is something spiritual
about being up on that trail."
The 2008 Mt. Wilson Trail Race
will be held on Sat., May 24 at 7:30 a.m. The race begins and ends in Kersting
Court at the corner of Baldwin Avenue and Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre
and winds up and back down the mountain side for almost 9 miles. Registration is
required to run the race, but everyone is welcome to come out and join Sharon on
the sidelines for a full-day of fun and activities. For more information contact

California’s Second Oldest Trail Race-100 Years
Of The Mount Wilson Trail Race.
The Mount Wilson Trail Race is
celebrating its 100th anniversary this year! The Trail Race will
occur on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 7:30am sharp. The 8.6 mile which starts and
ends in Kersting Court, is run along the Mt. Wilson Trail to Orchard Camp, which
used to serve as the rest point between Sierra Madre and the top of Mt. Wilson.
Participants will climb over 2,100 vertical feet along the single-track trail
and then come back down again, for a total distance of 8.6 miles. The trail
promises to be challenging for even the fittest runner.
On Friday, May 23, 2008 there is a pre-race Pasta
Load Party. A pasta dinner will be served, provided by Café 322, in Kersting
Court from 6:00pm-8:00pm for $6.75. Pre-registration will also take place at
the pasta feed where participants can pick up their race number and t-shirt.
New for this year is a Family Award category.
Participants can team with other family members and compete for the Family
Award. The combined time of the each family team will be calculated and the
lowest average time will take home the prize!

www.mountwilsontrailrace.com. All entries are due by Monday, May 12, 2008.
This race will be sold out, so get your entry in early!
The Trail Race sells out every year, so be sure to register
early! The post-race festivities will be held in Kersting Court, and will offer
an open air beer garden, as well as, vendor booths and a children’s art exhibit.
Local restaurants will open early to accommodate hungry race supporters, some
offering outdoor sidewalk café style dining.
