Members of St. Rita's Boy Scout Troop 110 enjoy the flapjacks at the 2007 SMVFA annual Pancake Breakfast, this year set for May 17th. The whole town should really show up, after last weekend.

Trail Race Aims to be a Spectator Sport

Back to Trail Race Main Page

The thought of running up a rugged trail across the side of a mountain at 7:30 on a Saturday morning may make some people, probably a lot of people, want to pull the covers up over their head. Lucky for them the Mt Wilson Trail Race is more than just a dash for the finish line. It's a day of community, friends, and fun for the whole family.

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the first ever trail race up to Orchard Camp and back, the volunteer Trail Race Steering Committee, led by Citizen of the Year Pete Siberell, is inviting everyone to come out and watch the excitement as world class trail race runners battle the mountain, themselves and each other on their nine mile high speed hike.

While spectators are waiting for competitors to make it back across the finish line and throughout the rest of the morning they will find plenty of things to keep them busy and entertained. Wander through Kersting Court and browse the booths from Elite Fitness Boot Camp, New Balance, Patagonia, Jamba Juice, Budincinch Chiropractic, Kaiser, the Sierra Madre Historical Society, and Train fitness center. Do some shopping, have a snack, or just make a new friend.

Local singer/songwriter Lisa Turner will be entertaining the crowds with her unique and head-turning musical stylings described as "Celtic-tinged acoustic power folk rock." And for the adults this year, the Sierra Madre Rotary is sponsoring a beer garden where folks can find a little post race refreshment.

The Committee is also hoping for a big crowd to come out and cheer on the littlest runners in town who can participate in the Kid's Fun Run. Children three and up can start practicing for the real deal by making a dash up Baldwin Avenue and back. For those kids who lean more towards the artistic side of life there will be a children's art show co-sponsored by the Sierra Madre Community Arts Commission.

The 2008 Mt. Wilson Trail Race will be held on Sat., May 24 at 7:30 a.m. The race begins and ends in Kersting Court at the corner of Baldwin Avenue and Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre, and everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the atmosphere of friendly competition.
