The fire spread quickly upslope in both a northwesterly and northeasterly direction due to warm temperatures, wind and low humidity. On Sunday April 27, 2008 Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 assumed command of the fire.

The heavy marine layer that remained throughout Wednesday allowed firefighters to build more fireline and extinguish more hot spots. Mop-up activities are well underway, and the job of rehabilitating where the fire is cold has begun. Firefighters are expected to complete the containment line around the perimeter of the fire on May 2nd. Still, residents may continue to see fire and smell smoke from the interior of this fire for several days.

Mt. Wilson Trail Race Update  Many people have e-mailed or inquired about the status of the 100th running of the Mt. Wilson Trail Race scheduled for May 24th in the wake of the recent fire.  The following is an excerpt from the Trail Race newsletter mailed to all participants April 30th, 2008.  You can view the complete newsletter by clicking here.

Sierra Madre Fire & Trail Condition

I have received many inquiries about the condition of the trail and whether it will be run as scheduled.  We will be assessing the trail in the next couple days and will let you know whether our volunteers can restore it to running condition by May 24.  As you can appreciate, it’s all about safety, and if we cannot ensure a safe race for hard core runners all the way to our recreational walkers taking part, we won’t do it.  But it’s a durable trail and I am confident we can do what it takes to make it ready.  So keep up the training unless or until I tell you to stop!
